“Vieja el Ultimo”
(The Last One´s A Sissy)
By Larry Silberman, Perla Szuchmacher &
Alegría Martínez
|
Ten-year-olds Mario and Frida arrive long before the
start of a birthday party. They come in costume: he as a mariachi musician,
she with a magician’s suit and a mask that does not reveal her gender.
While they await the others, the children begin to play in harmonious
partnership--until Frida loses her mask. Mario feels deceived and furious
at having related with a girl, and what began as lighthearted play takes
a competitive turn. Mario’s sexist prejudices are confronted with
Frida’s egalitarian attitude. However, a sudden cut of electricity
makes the lights go out, and the need to face their immediate fears reunited
the two children.
This play is about sexism and its effects on children, and the importance
of education within the family in dealing with this problem.
