LITTLE MAN (Hombrecito) Written by Larry Silberman Recommended for children 5 years old and over and adults The Little Man has fled his war-torn native country to live as a refugee in an unfamiliar part of the world, where he doesn’t speak the language or know the customs. And it is hard to go through all of this without as so much as a helping hand! This play tells us about the adventures and misadventures of the Little Man in this unknown and strange country and finally how he comes to find happiness and new home. This show is sponsored by UNHCR: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR) Refugees are people who are forced to leave their country under the threat of persecution motivated by race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group and who cannot rely on the protection of their country of origin. Many refugees abandon their countries to escape war, armed conflicts or gross human rights violations. To receive asylum when your life, liberty or physical wellbeing is under threat in your native country is considered a basic human right according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We can all do a lot for the people in our community who are refugees, by respecting them and offering a helping hand. They have lost everything and wish to return to a normal life in a country very different to their own.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a United Nations agency. The UNHCRs mandate is to provide protection for refugees and to find a lasting solution for their situation.
