OUR VISION

Grupo 55’s methodology is based upon three theoretical, ideological principles: Generating Action, Playing and Working as a Group

Generating Action

In all our work, we look for action: action that is provocative, loaded with intention, and capable of transforming its surroundings. Be it on stage, in the classroom or in your daily life, what really counts are your actions. Similarly, Grupo 55’s theatre work is based upon generating action, resulting in a theatre that is both physically and emotionally rich, as well as committed to our everyday reality. Whether our starting point for a new production be a written text or simply an idea to be developed, we begin our process with games and improvisations, as a way of developing not only character, situation and conflict, but even set-design, music, costume and the play itself.

Our educational concepts follow suit with this basic creative principle. We develop games and exercises that allow our students to play out living experiences, so that later on they may analyze them, develop their own conclusions and take home whatever they find most useful to their particular approach to creating theatre.

Playing

We consider the act of playing to be the very essence of life itself. When you play, you are complete. Feelings, thoughts and actions run in unison, fully alert and dedicated to solving the problems which the game poses upon you. Playing implies real commitment and the summoning of all your available capacities focused on the here and now in order to achieve the best possible results. It is an activity that provokes risk taking, experimentation and provides learning. Playing involves concentrating on the process, on the course of action, on the present, with full intensity, instead of merely speculating on the outcome. The ability to play provides our work onstage with innovation, depth and a true sense of belief. Likewise, it provides our workshops with a relaxed, open, trustful environment, which in turn favors creativity and full involvement.

Group work

For us, group work implies developing a democratic, horizontal manner of functioning within the performing arts as well as in education, so that each person involved may add creatively to the process, according to his or her particular role. Theatre is an endeavor in which individual as well as collective propositions are required. Group work requires the inclusion of different points of view, thereby widening personal horizons, motivating a spirit of mutual respect, and, ultimately, promoting diversity.
